HOW TO LOOK STYLISH AT EVERY AGE
It’s something we hear a lot. ''This dress makes me look a little old'', ''That store is too young for me''.
What do we really mean when we say these things?
Well, it can mean a few things… like antiquated florals, cat sweaters, and shoulder pads. For others, it’s when a woman hopes to look younger with stretchy miniskirts that belong to teenagers. In reality, someone might look out of step when they either dress too old, or too young, no matter how old they actually are. We all know twenty-somethings who look too old and retirees who are endlessly classy!
Here are the most common style mistakes that can make you look like you’re out of character and maybe a little corny. Don’t worry, if you identify with some of these, even the most stylish of stylists sometimes do!
Synthetic textiles that have a ''je ne sais quoi'' that is reminiscent of a party store, weird colours or patterns… It doesn’t take much to ruin your outfit. Instead of buying things impulsively because ''it’s not that bad'', invest in quality clothes that you really like. Keep your eyes open for timeless and lovely pieces like these!
BEWARE OF STRETCHES AND OTHER ''SOFT'' PIECES
With age, we tend to lean towards comfort rather than style, and many women reach for (overly?) casual pieces, often with a lot of stretch. Even though we all agree that a t-shirt is a great casual staple, it’s a good idea to find one in a thicker fabric and of higher quality.
Do you have a dress or pants that came with a matching fabric belt? Swap it for a leather one, for a more finished look.
Same goes for jeans: lower quality denim that contains too much stretchy fibre does not say sophisticated. Your jeans are not supposed to fit like a second skin. Ideally, they should be fitted around your rear to lift it and they can be wider throughout the leg, depending on your favourite fit, whether it be straight or boot cut.
As for leggings, go for thick/sporty ones. See-through leggings tend to look a bit sloppy.
''BUT IT’S BACK IN STYLE!''
Yes, the 90s are all the rage right now, but let’s not forget that retro trends come back in the form of details and inspiration only, while cuts must stay modern. Here’s how to adopt the nineties in 2018!
SAY NO TO MATCHY-MATCHY OUTFITS
Outfits that match too much are a no-no. We’re talking about matching your earrings with your necklace, bracelet, bag and belt. You LOVE blue? Great! But you don’t have to wear every blue accessory you own at the same time!
THINK OF YOUR OUTFIT AS AN ENSEMBLE
A common mistake women make while picking out an outfit is not thinking about the geometry of their look enough. For instance, wearing loose pieces from head to toe makes it look like you’re hiding. Tight everything, on the other hand, leaves nothing to the imagination and isn’t visually interesting. Add dimension to all your outfits by combining something looser on top with slim pants, or wider pants with something fitted on top.
SKIRT AND DRESS LENGTH
We’re lucky, nowadays, we can go for pretty much any skirt and dress length. However, the length you pick should influence the rest of your outfit. A long skirt will look much more stylish with a tucked in tee than with a classic button-up shirt. It’s all about balance!
If you follow these simple tips, you’ll never have to worry about not looking your very best again!
